Pag cheese is a traditional cheese from the island of Pag in Croatia that holds great significance in the country’s culture and cuisine. Made from the milk of the indigenous Pag sheep, this cheese has a unique flavor and texture that is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Strategic position of the island adds to the unique flavour of the cheese. Strong north wind „Bura“ that blows in the winter period makes waves that splash the grasslands of the island making the grass rich with sea minerals and salt.

Finally, the cheese is aged for a minimum of six months, resulting in a flavor that is both sharp and salty.

Pag cheese is an important part of Croatian culinary heritage and is often served as an appetizer or with local wines. It has also become a symbol of the country’s identity and is highly valued by the people of Pag.

In 2018, Pag cheese was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This recognition was due to the cheese’s cultural and historical significance in Croatian culture, as well as the traditional production methods used to create it. Being on the list has helped to promote the cheese worldwide and ensure that the tradition is preserved for future generations.
